Verhaal
In de documentairefilm New Pigs on the Block richt filmmaker Jimmy Kets de camera op 3 varkens: Luc, Mia & Anja. Zij spelen de hoofdrol in een sociaal buurtproject. Op een met elektrische draad afgebakend stukje niemandsland, tussen een spoorweg en een kleine parking, verwerken de varkens de voedseloverschotten van restaurants en winkels uit de buurt. Een nobel opzet. De film start dan ook in een ogenschijnlijk aards paradijs, waar ze kunnen eten naar believen en waar ze warmte en vriendschap krijgen van de buurtbewoners.
Maar langzaam kantelt het. De buitenwereld verstoort steeds vaker en steeds harder hun vredige bestaan. De zomer gaat intussen over in de herfst, hun plek raakt in verval, de sfeer tussen de varkens wordt grimmiger en hun vertrouwen in de mens ebt weg.
De camera brengt ons niet alleen op ooghoogte van Luc, Mia en Anja, hij kijkt vandaar ook met hen mee naar de mens. New Pigs on the Block is een teder confronterende film, die op ongeziene wijze de ambigue relatie belicht tussen mens en dier.
Histoire
Dans le film documentaire New Pigs on the Block, le réalisateur Jimmy Kets braque sa caméra sur trois cochons : Luc, Mia et Anja. Ils jouent le rôle principal dans un projet de quartier social. Sur un no man's land, délimité par un fil électrique, entre une voie ferrée et un petit parking, les cochons transforment les excédents alimentaires des restaurants et des magasins du quartier. Une idée noble. Le film commence dans un paradis apparemment terrestre, où ils peuvent manger à leur guise et recevoir chaleur et amitié de la part des habitants.
Mais lentement, les choses basculent. Le monde extérieur perturbe de plus en plus souvent et de plus en plus gravement leur existence paisible. Pendant ce temps, l'été se transforme en automne, leur lieu de vie se détériore, l'atmosphère entre les cochons devient sinistre et leur foi en l'humanité s'effrite.
La caméra ne nous emmène pas seulement au niveau des yeux de Luc, Mia et Anja, elle regarde aussi l'humanité de ce point de vue. New Pigs on the Block est un film tendrement confrontant, qui éclaire d'une manière inédite la relation ambiguë entre les humains et les animaux.
Story
In the documentary film New Pigs on the Block, filmmaker Jimmy Kets turns the camera on three pigs: Luc, Mia & Anja. They play the leading role in a social community project. On a piece of no man's land, demarcated by an electric wire, between a railway and a small parking lot, the pigs process the food surpluses of restaurants and shops in the neighbourhood. A noble idea. The film starts in a seemingly earthly paradise, where they can eat as they please and receive warmth and friendship from the local residents.
But slowly it starts to shift. The outside world disturbs their peaceful existence more and more often, and with increasing severity. Meanwhile, summer turns into autumn, their place deteriorates, the atmosphere between the pigs becomes grim and their faith in mankind ebbs away.
The camera not only takes us to the eye level of Luc, Mia and Anja, it also looks at mankind from their perspective. New Pigs on the Block is a tenderly confrontational film, which illuminates the ambiguous relationship between humans and animals in an unprecedented way.
Het Vierde Varken
Het was tijdens een zomeravondwandeling in 2018 dat Jimmy Kets vlak bij zijn woning op 3 jonge varkens botste. Voor Kets was het liefde op het eerste gezicht. Gefascineerd door hun manier van bewegen en communiceren, voelde hij de onweerstaanbare drang om zijn camera te richten op het drietal. Het werd een obsessie. Vier maanden lang volgde hij elk doen en laten van Luc, Mia en Anja.
Van bij het begin koos Jimmy Kets er resoluut voor om het verhaal te vertellen vanuit het perspectief van de varkens. Élk beeld moest dus worden genomen op hún ooghoogte, en élk shot moest in de weide zelf zijn gemaakt. Er kwam geen enkele zoomlens aan te pas, want Kets wilde absolute betrokkenheid met zijn onderwerp volgens de beste humanistische traditie. Voor een close-up van een oog was er zo amper 10 cm afstand tussen de camera en het varken. Er zat met andere woorden niets anders op dan mee varken te worden met de varkens. Jimmy Kets werd het met plezier en overtuiging. Dit is een film die zonder de zo kenmerkende overgave en vastberadenheid van zijn maker nooit had kunnen worden gemaakt.
Le Quatrième Cochon
C'est lors d'une promenade en soirée d'été en 2018 que Jimmy Kets a croisé trois jeunes cochons près de chez lui. Pour Kets, ce fut le coup de foudre. Fasciné par leur façon de se déplacer et de communiquer, il a ressenti l'envie irrésistible de pointer son appareil photo sur le trio. C'est devenu une obsession. Pendant quatre mois, il a suivi tous les faits et gestes de Luc, Mia et Anja.
Dès le départ, Jimmy Kets a résolument choisi de raconter l'histoire du point de vue des cochons. Chaque image devait donc être prise à la hauteur de leurs yeux, et chaque prise de vue devait être réalisée dans la prairie même. Aucun zoom n'a été utilisé, car Kets voulait une implication absolue avec son sujet, dans la meilleure tradition humaniste. Pour un gros plan d'un œil, il y avait à peine 10 cm de distance entre la caméra et le cochon. En d'autres termes, il n'y avait rien d'autre à faire que de devenir des cochons parmi les cochons. Jimmy Kets l'a fait avec plaisir et conviction. C'est un film qui n'aurait jamais pu être réalisé sans le dévouement et la détermination caractéristiques de son réalisateur.
The Fourth Pig
It was during a summer evening walk in 2018 that Jimmy Kets came across three young pigs near his home. For Kets, it was love at first sight. Fascinated by their way of moving and communicating, he felt the irresistible urge to point his camera at the trio.
It became an obsession. For four months he followed every move of Luc, Mia and Anja.
From the start Jimmy Kets resolutely chose to tell the story from the pigs' perspective. So, every image had to be taken at their eye level, and every shot had to be made in the meadow itself. No zoom lenses were used whatsoever, because Kets wanted absolute involvement with his subject in the best humanist tradition. For a close-up of an eye, there was barely 10 cm distance between the camera and the pig. In other words, there was nothing left to do but to become one with the pigs. Jimmy Kets did so with pleasure and conviction. This is a film that could never have been made without the characteristic dedication and determination of its maker.
